WoolWinders Instructor Gives Back to Community

Suzy Roy

Susan Allaway, WoolWinders staffer/instructor, was selected as a Judge for the Skein & Garment Competition at the 2019 Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival.  Susan was thrilled to see and judge the wonderful finished garments that were submitted by our talented fiber arts community.  There were multiple awards for finished items, including those made from hand spun and breed specific yarns as well as items that were made from Maryland fleeces.  According to Susan, all were just stunning.  She urges you to stop by the judged exhibition at next year's festival.

Susan teaches many classes at WoolWinders and is the ongoing instructor for the Fixing Mistakes and Finishing Technique classes.  After having been exposed to all the inspiring handmade items at the 2019 Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, she stresses the importance of properly finishing a garment.  Simple techniques such as weaving in the ends, blocking, and seaming are essential to completing a project that was so beautifully made by hand.  Check out all of the classes offered by the extraordinary WoolWinders instructors or stop by the shop for a printed schedule.

Knitspiring Story

Suzy Roy

Jeanne Tufano was recently featured in an article on the Holy Cross Health website titled “After Melanoma, Reconstructive Surgery Helps Restore Jeanne's Quality of Life.”  Jeanne chose the Woolwinders Rockville shop as the location of the photo shoot for the article.  Read Jeanne’s testimonial below which speaks about her connection to knitting and Woolwinders.  We are so happy that Jeanne has conquered her battle with melanoma and has returned to Woolwinders for her weekly Safari class.

" Woolwinders was a large part of my recovery.  The friends I’ve made through Safari and other classes, as well as the staff, helped me deal with the healing process of my physical “deformity”.  Knitting has always been my happy place. Woolwinders has given me a happy place to knit.  Now I have two happy places in one!  I chose Woolwinders to be the place for the centerpiece of my photo shoot because in addition to its being the best LYS in the area, it's also the best place to learn and grow as a knitter and a person."  -- Jeanne Tufano
